Become a Certified Baby Sleep Coach:

Baby Sleep Coach Certification

Considering a rewarding career as a baby sleep coach? If you want to be successful, your first step is to become certified. Why? Because your baby sleep coach certification will show future clients that you’re an expert in your field.

And the perks don’t stop there. Becoming a certified baby sleep consultant can offer you the income, flexibility, and job satisfaction you’re seeking.

I’ve taught bright, motivated, caring individuals to become certified baby sleep consultants for more than 10 years. And I’ve found that some put off getting certified because they weren’t sure where to start. If you’re overwhelmed with all the information out there, here’s your go-to guide to get your baby sleep coach certification — the right way.

Step One: Decide What Type of School is Right for You

Baby sleep coach certification can be obtained in various ways through traditional schools.  You will need to:

  • Find a school within driving distance that offers classes in childcare, including child sleep coaching.
  • Sit down with a counselor to find out what courses you need to take to attend the school. (These may include math and English, for example, no matter what your major is.)
  • Map out a two- to four-year plan to get certified or accredited as a sleep consultant.
  • Pay tuition or obtain a student loan.

Traditional schools can be great. But for people who are already in the working world, or who need flexibility that a traditional school can’t give, there are online schools instead. With an online school, you will:

  • Find the best Sleep Consultant training program for your needs without limiting your choices to local schools.
  • Meet with the school’s professionals, usually via Zoom.
  • Choose the specific classes you’ll need to get to your goal. (Schools dedicated to baby sleep coach certification usually will not require general ed courses, such as English or Math.)
  • Take courses on your own time.

Step Two: Vet the School

Whether you go the traditional or online route, you need to make sure your school is a solid choice. Unfortunately, when I researched the idea of opening my own school years ago, I found quite a few scam online schools. Make sure to AVOID:

  • Programs that are new/have opened very recently
  • Programs with a very similar name to another sleep certification course that has recently closed
  • Programs that have no reviews from real students
  • Programs that are not taught by professionals such as nurses, nurse practitioners, and legal advisors
  • Programs that do not have CLEAR contact information, including a phone number and email address

Make sure to CHOOSE:

  • A school that has existed for at least 5 years
  • A school with a solid reputation (check reviews)
  • Courses that are taught by professionals in the medical and legal fields
  • Access to the school’s director by email, phone call or Zoom
  • A school that offers payment plans and flexibility

Step Three: Look for THESE Important Classes

Look for courses that cover the following:

  • The biology of sleep (including infant sleep stages)
  • Science-backed techniques for helping infants to sleep train
  • The different types of sleep training most professionals use
  • How to handle bumps in the road while working with clients
  • The business side of being a certified infant sleep coach
  • Legal issues you may encounter

If you plan on specializing — for example, you would like to work with newborns or with special needs children — make sure to ask what other courses you’ll need to take.

Step Four: Get the Details

Next, you will need to find out a few details. Ask the school director:

  • How long the course will take
  • When you can take classes (does the school offer flexibility?)
  • What the total cost of your courses will be
  • Whether there is a savings on tuition paid earlier (for example,3, 6- or 9-month plans)
  • Whom you can reach if you have questions
