Becoming a baby sleep consultant is one of those career choices that feels more like a calling than a job. At least, that’s absolutely how it felt for me. It comes with its challenges (what career doesn’t?), but also incredible freedom. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like being a sleep consultant, step into my shoes for a day! Today, get a glimpse inside my life.
What’s it Like Being a Sleep Consultant?
My Days Start with Gratitude
That’s right—NOT to the sound of an alarm clock, but with gratitude. I find that this practice sets me up every single day with the right headspace.
I do wake up early, but not because I HAVE to. I don’t have an office to rush off to. I don’t have a boss to check in with. Instead, I choose to structure my mornings around gratitude for what I do.
That means checking in with my clients (usually scrolling through my phone to see how their babies slept the night before).
When I see the positivity and the ‘thank you’s’ on my phone, along with plenty of smiling baby pictures, I feel fueled for my day ahead and passionate about the work I’m doing.
There isn’t any rushing out the door or driving down a packed highway; as a sleep consultant, your office is wherever you choose it to be.
That flexibility is HUGE for me because it means I can eat breakfast with my family, enjoy a cup of coffee while I plan my day, and see my kids off to school.
Work Doesn’t Feel Like Work
After my usual morning routine, it’s time for me to settle into my workday.
But, it doesn’t really feel like a WORKday.
Each day is different for me, depending on what my client’s needs are and what my needs are (yep—I get to prioritize that!).
As a baby sleep consultant, I wear many hats. In my morning, I might conduct individual consultations over video with a client (I charge $895 for a video consult), check in over text, draft a personalized sleep plan for another client, or take a phone call to discuss a client’s problem areas.
Each client brings a different story and a different challenge, which means a day filled with always interesting tasks that keep me on my toes.
In my day, there are so many moments of teaching, listening, and sharing—and, I get to witness the growth of so many young families.
Plus, working from home = unlimited coffee + pajama pants. Can it really get any better?
Baby brand collaborations
In the midmornings, I like to work on collaborations with baby brands. One of the fun parts of being a sleep consultant is that baby companies often send free products, offer commissions, and sometimes even ask you to be a brand ambassador. Some of our graduates are doing this full-time, making great money from brand deals while getting more clients from the extra exposure. It’s just one of the many ways you can earn as a sleep consultant, beyond just consultations. If you’re curious, I’m happy to share the media kit I use when brands reach out—it’s really helpful for getting paid collaborations! Just email me, and I’ll send you my ready-to-use template!
Afternoons are for learning and connecting…
After catching up with clients, I like to change locations. My go-to spots are a local coffee shop near me, or sometimes I’ll grab a bite to eat while I’m working (it’s almost always tacos, don’t judge me).
The flexibility of being a sleep consultant means I can really work anywhere, as long as I have internet connection.
In my afternoons, I like to stay updated with my community and spend some time learning. Because the job isn’t just about consultations.
Being a part of the sleep consultant community means continuous learning, meaning staying up-to-date with pediatric sleep science and sharing experiences with other consultants like me.
I also take the time to check in with my students at the Institute of Pediatric Sleep and Parenting (IPSP).
This is one of the most fulfilling parts of my day, because the sense of community is strong, always openly celebrating achievements and passing along encouragement.
Because of how much this career has given me, the freedom I get every single day, I get incredible satisfaction leading others into this field.
Sharing my experiences and inspiring other women like me to take control of their careers has been rewarding beyond words. I get to see women change their lives through education—and I get to witness their financial freedom, their time spent with family, their ability to travel and live life just how they want to.
The Most Important Part of My Day…
My favorite time of day is when I get to pick my kids up from school and do whatever after-school activity we have on.
Because of my career, I can be present for every single minute of that time. With work taken care of in the morning and early afternoon, the rest of my day is dedicated to my family.
If it wasn’t for my career, I just wouldn’t be able to do all of this.
Before I became a baby sleep consultant, I was an RN. And I loved my job—it was fulfilling, I got to help people, and the pay was decent. But I worked long hours, and didn’t spend as much time as I desperately wanted with my little ones.
The number 1 reason I’m grateful for this career is getting that time back. There is nothing more important to me.
So if you’re looking to become a baby sleep consultant, I can’t recommend it enough.
In order to start your consulting business, you do need to become certified and educated in all the right areas. I created IPSP to do just that, so I could bring more women into this amazing, freeing career path.
