Becoming a new mom is exciting, beautiful, life-changing…and let’s be real, expensive! When I became a mother to my beautiful daughter, I knew I wanted to stay home to watch her milestones. But we were missing my income as a nurse. So I discovered the best side hustle ideas for moms. (Psst…check out #1 for the most game-changing and rewarding side hustle I found!)
Best Side Hustle Ideas For Moms:
What to Look For
When I was looking for my absolute best side hustle ideas for moms (don’t forget my #1 pick below!), I looked for:
- A gig that would be flexible time-wise
- Something I could do while never missing my daughter’s milestones
- A GREAT income
- Interaction with others (as an RN, I am a “people” person)
I have found that most new parents looking for an income are interested in at least the first three. Most want interaction as well — being a new mom is wonderful, but it can be lonely at times. Everyone needs “grownup” interaction!
Keeping the following in mind, the list below covers at least 3 of the 4 “must-haves” above. Here are my top picks for side hustles for moms:

The Best Side Hustle Ideas For Moms
Here are the best side hustle ideas for moms, counting down to #1:
#4: Freelance Platforms
I admit I never tried this. I jumped straight from being an RN to #1 below. But I do know other moms who go on freelance marketplaces to get work, so I’m giving it a mention here.
It does miss the interaction factor, at least to an extent. Yes, you’ll be communicating with clients, but it will be very “surface” communication. But if you are looking for a side hustle that won’t involve a lot of talk, a freelance platform could be just the thing for you.
You need to bring a skill to the table when you use these platforms. They include Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, and similar marketplaces. You list your skills, approach jobs (usually for a small fee), and if the client likes what they see, you get that job. Be aware that you will be relying on client feedback, which you usually can’t remove except under specific circumstances. But the plus side is that you can build your reputation until you’re earning more, and you can do it all from home!
Platforms like Etsy allow you to showcase the crafty skills you have. Do you sew? Refurbish antiques? Put together delicious concoctions for the hair or skin? Then crafting may be for you!
You can also sell your crafts on Facebook marketplace and similar platforms.
Make sure you’re really good at what you do — customers are picky! But if you’ve always been told you have a talent for creating, a crafting site may be the perfect side hustle you can do while your little one is napping or playing beside you.
#2: Working From Home
All of these are gigs you can work from home, but in this case, I’m talking about having a heart-to-heart with your current employer. You might be surprised how many companies allow employees leaving to be with children to work occasional jobs on an independent contractor basis.
Ask your employer whether they’d be open to continuing communication in case a project pops up. This may be less reliable and more occasional than some of the side gigs listed here, but there’s nothing like a little windfall to help with the bills while staying home with your little one.
#1: Baby Sleep Consulting
Here’s the gig I chose. And there are so many reasons it’s the best side hustle idea for moms.
if you love chatting with other moms, becoming a sleep consultant may be a great choice for you. You get to stay home and do what you’re probably doing anyway: connecting and chatting with moms in baby groups, forums, at mommy and me classes. But you get to charge for it.
How? by becoming a sleep consultant. When I was looking for a GREAT side gig so that I could stay home with my daughter, I put my metaphorical nursing cap on and came up with baby sleep consulting. It all started when my friends began to ask how I had helped my daughter learn to sleep through the night. I realized I had a talent, and I wanted to learn more about it. So I became certified, and today I enjoy more freedom and a better income than I ever imagined.
I always think of infant sleep consulting when moms are seeking a side hustle because it’s so great for moms…in every way. You get to:
- Stay home to watch those important first milestones
- Arrange clients around your schedule
- Bring in an amazing income
- Get much-needed interaction with other moms
I started out simply chatting on forums, revealing the knowledge I’d gained. And things exploded from there. That’s another awesome thing about baby sleep consulting: you’re already on forums and in groups. It’s a natural side gig for moms who want to help other moms. Win-win!
