Business Ideas for Nurses

Okay, reality check: we nurses do it all…at work and at home. That can mean missing out on your children’s important milestones and being tired all the time (I’m sure you feel that!). Isn’t there a better way? I sure think so! I found one of the best business ideas for nurses was working from home as a baby sleep consultant.

Here’s my story, and how you too can have balance work, family and your own “me” time.

I Was Exhausted. (Are You?)

I always loved my job as an RN. Helping people is one of my greatest joys in life. So when my first beautiful daughter arrived, I was sure I could balance work with home life. After all, we’re all supposed to be Superwomen…especially nurses. We’re known for long days and for being that person our patients can really trust. Taking care of a baby on top of work was going to be a piece of cake.

Can I get a “nope”? Almost immediately, I realized I was missing out on my daughter’s babyhood…and not just while I was at work. At home, I was exhausted. I was breastfeeding, my daughter wasn’t sleeping well, and neither was I. I felt like a zombie half the time, going through the motions.

Instead of enjoying this very special time in my child’s life, I put my blood, sweat, and tears into a company that expected me back to work ASAP postpartum and never asked how I was doing as a new mother. Deep down, I felt it was all wrong.

One morning as I handed my daughter off to my husband for a five-minute shower and break, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror and thought: This is not how I envisioned motherhood. Leaving my daughter every day was agonizing. I wanted nothing more than to be home with them. For the cuddles, for the nursing sessions and to be there for every single new milestone.

Okay, so now what?

I Found One of the Best Business Ideas for Nurses

Through desperation, I was on a mission to find a way to have a rewarding career helping others, without sacrificing time with my family. Somehow, through my fog of total exhaustion, I managed to find gentle, effective ways to get my daughter to sleep through the night. When I did, my friends and family members began to ask me to help their little ones get to sleep, and an idea was born.

I started my sleep consulting business as a side hustle, and within a year I was making more than my nursing salary. But I held on to my nursing job for a while longer because of fear, doubt, and a feeling that this was all too good to be true. After all, we needed to eat, and we had always relied on both my and my husband’s salaries.

One day, while I was at work, I was just stepping out of a patient’s room when I received a notification on my phone. A client had just purchased one of my VIP packages. At that moment, I had an epiphany. This one client had paid me the same amount I would earn in an entire week at my nursing job. Moreover, I was getting several of these clients per week.

I knew it was time to leave, and this time, I had the confidence to do it. Finally, I had found “it.” One of the best business ideas for nurses ever. And I have loved every minute of infant sleep consulting since.

Motherhood, Family Life…and 3X Your Salary?

Every baby sleep consultant is different. How much you earn depends upon your certification and credentials, your ability to work with families, and on how many clients you want to take in.

What I found was that with my baby sleep consultant business, I was earning 3 X my nursing salary. Yes, you read that right. I could hardly believe it. All I knew was that I was living my dream life, scheduling clients around my family’s schedule and being financially very comfortable. And I wanted to pass that on to others. That’s why I started the Institute of Pediatric Sleep and Parenting.
